Understanding Mice and How to Spot Them
Signs You May Have Mice
You may not always see mice directly, but here are the key signs our technicians look for:
- Droppings – small, black spindle-shaped droppings around 5 mm long.
- Gnaw marks – small tooth marks on food packaging, building materials or wood.
- Smear marks – dark, greasy rub marks along walls and skirting boards from repeated runs.
- Noise – light scratching or scurrying sounds, especially at night.
- Odour – a musty, musky smell from urine and nesting areas.
- Damage – nibbled food, frayed materials, and small holes chewed through wood or plastic.
How to Spot Mice
Appearance
Mice are small, slender rodents with brownish-grey colouring.
House mice are grey.
Field mice have a chestnut colour with a white underside.
They have pointed noses, thin tails slightly shorter than their body length, small ears with fine hairs and weigh around 25 g.
Droppings
Mouse droppings are around 5 mm long, thin and spindle-shaped.
A single mouse can produce up to 80 droppings per day, often found near food, along skirting boards or in cupboards. Fresh droppings are soft, shiny and dark; older droppings become dry, dull and eventually grey.
Behaviour and Lifecycle
Mice are creatures of habit and regularly use the same runs, leaving smear marks along surfaces. They nibble food, often leaving small, scattered tooth marks rather than fully consuming it.
Although their lifespan is only 6–12 months, they reproduce rapidly – with 5–8 litters per year and 4–8 young per litter. Young mice reach maturity in 6–8 weeks, meaning a small problem can quickly escalate into a major infestation.
